Democracy and the State
“Who governs Britain?” demanded Edward Heath in 1974 – 30 years on it is still the judiciary, Brussels and quangoes. Unprecedented powers are wielded by un-elected, un-representative quangoes. More vicious State centralisation. A good example of this is Tony Blair’s cabinet within a cabinet and sofa style policy making, often delivering policy ideas via the press rather than Parliament. Localism is the answer – more devolved power from Whitehall to locally elected and accountable politicians – less bureaucracy more action. Our chief constables should be elected and answerable to the electorate they serve rather than the Home Secretary.
