Education

I am a defender of Kent’s 11+ selection system. I don’t believe in the one size fits all for education which has failed this country’s children for 3 decades. Our children need a system that is fair to all by offering those that are academically able a high level of academia, our brightest should be encouraged to excel and those that are best suited to a less rigorous academic subjects be offered a high standard in other competencies.

What parents want is for their local school to be a good school and that must be the focus for all politicians involved in education policy: issues such as setting and streaming, synthetic phonics and a rigorous curriculum are key to delivering that quality.
We must also recognise that discipline in schools has declined exponentially under this government. Teachers should be able to teach and reprimand without fear of false allegations of abuse or intimidation by parents. Head teachers should be able to exclude but we have to provide centres for those who have been exclude to re-educate them in the rights and wrongs. Sadly, though, the New Labour current thinking is that teachers will not be able to teach right from wrong but a woolly general knowledge of what is ‘appropriate’ and the broad rules of political correctness..
